How to use patterns and prints?

It is great to see your room painted with your desired color but are you aware that you can upgrade it into the next level? Painting your room feels so much fun especially if you are the one doing and creating it. We all have this curiosity that we aim to learn something everyday. Besides, learning means growing.

I researched and found out that you can design your own room or any part of your house using different patterns and prints. One of the biggest dillemas concerning decorating a room is how to use pattern and print: how much is too much?

We all think that using only a plain color decorating the room is already fine and great. However, if we use patterns, there are a lot of changes that can happen too. Like a wallpaper for example, it can hide stains, spots and scratches of the wall and make it look like brand new. Or it can mask the shape of an awkward room.

In addition, we sometimes think that a patterned room makes the room look more exaggerated in terms of the design. Little did we know that when we use dark printed design wallpaper in a specific room, it makes it look more wider and bigger. Print and pattern create remarkable interior design and your visitors or viewers will recognize its own identity.

If your furniture is a bit on the marginal side, use pattern and print to trick the eye into thinking the furniture is better than it actually is. Practically speaking, using wallpaper is much cheaper than painting your own room. Why is that so? There are a lot of affordable wallpapers that are waterproof, so if it happened that you accidentally spill something on the wall, you can just wipe it. Also, wallpaper doesn’t immediately gets old unlike painted walls, you need to repaint it for a span of 2-4 years depending how long you occupy the room.

Another pattern is by using fabric. It is important to match the furniture we have to the type of fabric we will use because our relationship with our furniture is for a long-term commitment.

To help you understand and choose what is the most appropriate pattern, here are the below list:

Abrasion Resistance. This is the fabric’s ability to resist wear from rubbing, It contributes the durability. Fibers that absorb water are easier to clean. All natural fibers from animal and vegetables  are hydrophilic, as are two synthetic fibers: rayon and acerte – that means they absorb water and thus clean more easily.

Brocade. A weighty fabric woven of silk, cotton, wool, or a combination. It is often used for upholstery and fraperies.

Chenille. Typically a cotton, chenille is looped with a protruding pile. It can be used for upholtery and pillows.

Chintz. It is a glazed cotton. Chintzing is a form of finishing; it gives the fabric a slight sheen. It is not recommendable if you’ll use this for an area for heavy use.

Cotton. A natural fiber with good abrasion resistance, good draping ability, and a soft hand.

Damask. It made of heavy reversible fine yams of cotton, silk, or wool.

Duck. Is a closely woven cotton or linen. It is durable and slightly lighter in weight than canvas.

Lace. A cotton or cotton-polyester blend material featuring open-work designs.

Linen. This fabric has strength but poor abradion resistance. Linen is not as durable as a cotton, nor does it drape well.

Matelasse. This is a medium- to heavy-weight, luxurious double cloth with a blistered or quilted surface.

Muslin. Plain-weave cotton in white or cream. It is often sheer and not as heavy as duck.

Overall. This is a term for pattern that is even and overall or random.

Self Patterns. This term is used to describe a fabric wherein the weave creates a pattern.

Silk. It is traditionally am natural fiber, but today it often contains strong, durable synthetic fibers as as well. Silk has excellent drape and a luxurious hand.

Stripes. These are versatile and timeless. They can be formal or informal. Stripes are an ideal choice for dining chairs with wood frame.

Tepestry. This is heavy, ribbed, colored jacquard design made of wool and silk.

Ticking. Is strong, closely woven cotton that usually has stripes.

Toile de Jouy. An eighteenth-centurycotton or linen fabric printed with pastoral scenes.

Wool. This is natural fiber can be scratchy and expensive.

Woven Fabrics. These fabrics are made by weaving two sets of yarns at the right angles to each other to create complex designs.

And who says you can’t use print and pattern for the flooring? Here’s another interior design:

What are the artificial lights that can possibly change the colors inside your house?

On my previous blog, it talked about artificial lights, let’s get to know as well some of them with a brief explanation on how it is connected to the colors that you will be choosing to your house.

1. Fluorescent light, as discussed, it creates a bluish form of light that can make a certain color distort. And some of the colors, fluorescent light can make it more highlighted.

2. Incandescent light, this is the standard light bulb we normally used in chandeliers and some of the bulbs we use in our home.

3. Halogen light, another latest type of incandescent bulb, that is white and closest to natural sunlight. Of all three of bulbs, halogen is the most real and reflects the true desired color.

If there are any questions about these artificial lights, feel free to comment down below. Thank you for reading!

HOW TO KNOW WHAT COLOR IS BEST TO YOUR HOME?

Is your house old and you want to somehow change the wall color of your house or room to make it look like new? Or did you just buy a house or planning to buy a house and you’re not quite sure what color will best suit to your home?

Colors are powerful and create greater effects to your house. Colors can also highlight the different sides of your house or your room. It can be detailed as it depends to your preference. A specific color can make a room cozy, while others can cool down the heat of a sunny weather.

When choosing a color, always check the view in different times of the day, especially during hours in which you will inhabit the room.

In the bedroom, we normally occupy that room during nighttime, while in the kitchen and dining areas, it’s both daytime and nighttime use. The living room is mostly a nighttime use too. Bathrooms or shower rooms are being used during daytime and nighttime because before we leave the house and before we sleep, we usually take a bath.

Before you choose which color is best to your home, let’s be familiarized first to the colors and how their powers make our environment beautiful.

A rainbow has the color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet – or what we call ROYGBIV. Most of us admire the rainbow as it has all the colors ever created. But it is not always pleasant to view when all of the rainbow colors are combined in a single room. That’s the reason why we need to assign each color to each room so they can glow and show off the true beauty in them.

YELLOW warms the room that receives the northern light and makes the room
brighter. I highly recommend this color for daytime rooms, not the bedrooms.

Sometimes, we don’t usually pay attention to natural light or what we call the sunlight. When your room has a window that faces the east, yellow makes the room warmer

This color can sometimes be hot as the sun to our sight. But it depends on the shade of yellow we will be using.

RED is dramatic, strong and motivating. It boosts the appetite, which makes it the best
choice for dining rooms.

In most fast food restaurants, they used red colors to decorate the interior of their shop or use red in their logos. Red is the first color that reaches our sight, that’s the reason why most people boost their appetite in food.

Compared to yellow, red makes the room warmer or hotter in the afternoon because afternoon sun is more powerful than morning sun.

Unlike the natural light, artificial light can change the shade of the preferred color too. A simple fluorescent light can be deceiving from the hardware store compared to the actual room. It’s quite bluish and can distort colors.

Photo from Freestocks

Fluorescent light makes the red darker and it depresses it as well. A faded red can be changed into different shade of color if we will use fluorescent light, for example in the dining room it makes the red less appetizing.

ORANGE is energetic and cheerful. Orange, as the closest to red, stimulates appetite; that’s why there are so many fast-food restaurants use it in the decorations of their shop and logo. Since orange is strong and vibrant, it needed to paired with contrast to cool it down.

Orange is being highlighted during daytime, especially during the sun is rising.

Metaphorically, orange is like an orange fruit that provides us some vitamins we need. It might be sometimes hurtful in our eyes, mostly for those shades that are very bold, but it has lovely softer sides as well.

GREEN is mild, refreshing, and nurturing. It represents the nature. It is a psychological
primary, and because it is a combination of yellow and blue, it can reflect both warm and cool at the same time. Time seems to pass more quickly in green rooms. Probably one of the reasons why waiting rooms are sometimes called the “green rooms.”

Photo from Kara Eads

Since green’s appearance is like earth, green helps us to breathe in peacefully like a leaf that provides us oxygen. Normally, we can see green in our home offices or sometimes in our own study room because we could think easily in a grassy environment.

Also, as mentioned earlier, time runs so fast when you’re in a green room because it makes us more productive without us knowing.

According to study, green detoxifies our stress and makes us more relaxed than the usual. Aside from the healthy benefits of this color, some people also believe that green gives luck too as it is the color of money, with all our hard work, green supports us to continue receive blessings and money.

Green at its finest was shown below:

BLUE is like the sky. According
to some experts, blue is the preferable color in bedrooms. It gives comfort and makes the room cooler.

If you’re living near warm areas, I suggest picking a blue color to your desired room.

It makes our emotions happy and it complements our mood to make it calm. Blue is as fresh as a water that reflects the color from the sky.

It reminisces the feeling after taking a bath, smell of the wind while looking at the sky during late afternoon.

In addition, blue was being used to reveal a gender of a baby or when buying a gift for a man blue is the safest color to pick.

PURPLE is royal and independent. It’s always stands out in a different way. It is a mixture of blue and red. An eggplant is a darker shade of purple, while lavender forms a lighter one. As a decorating color, it goes in and out of fashion but always looks elegant as a pastel or as an accent.

Photo from Designecologist

This color has always been included to the color wheel. The fact that it gives lots of contribution to the colors, it is also provide some accent to the actual room. We treat purple as if it’s gender is a female. Because of its unique appearance, we normally see this color was being used to princesses’ gown or in any girly stuff.

Purple is attractive and it catches our sight that gives us the comfort. When using the purple as the color of your daughter’s room, I highly suggest to pick the lighter one because it is soft and cozy that will give your daughter a happy sight everyday.

Some people had picked this color as their perfect choice:

PINK is active and outgoing. This color sometimes found in bouquet, flower shop and in garden. Which basically means, it is commonly reflect as the color of the flower. Hot shades are intimidating, while soft, can be relaxed and charming.

Color pink has known for being a color chosen for girls, especially to children. Most mothers, reveal the gender of their daughter by this color. It practically shows that this color is really beautiful depending on what purpose will you do.

In wedding ideas, debut and other girl’s parties and celebrations, pink was commonly used as a theme or to decorate the venue or the souvenirs. Pink can sometimes be wild and attractive.

I suggest when picking this color, it is much more appreciated when being combined to accent colors that will make pink glow more and reveal its true color.

And lastly the neutrals colors:

GRAY goes with all colors. It is a combination of multiple colors. Various shades of gray range from dark charcoal to pale oyster.

Gray compliments mostly all the colors. If you paint your room with gray, and your furnitures have different colors, it still looks pleasant – but it depends to its shade that you will be using as well.

BLACK is bold and technically the absence of color. It enhances and highlights other colors make it livelier.

This color is plain but has a strong appearance, especially when paired to other light colors. If this will be the color that you will pick for your house, make sure that the lighting you will be using is appropriate.

Some people might think that black means sadness, loneliness and not appropriate to use to decorate their house, but black is elegant too. Black is like a blank space that provides the feeling of the skies at night. Also, it gives us peace at some point and because the night sky is dark as our pupil, it helps us think deeply in our thoughts. That explains why most people, choose nighttime for the best time to study or to work.

At the end of my blog, if you still can’t decide on what color will you choose, a color wheel will help you decide on which one is the best.

Color wheel is a tool decorators use to see the relationship of one color to another. The primary colors which are yellow, blue and red are combined in the remaining hues which are orange, green and purple. The colors next to each other were formed to blend into one another. Complementary colors – those opposite color on the color wheel – offer contrast and enhance one another. Colors that are not complimentary make each other less real – for example: blue and green become teal.

However, because of these color, there are a lot of new colors that were created. These are very unique that a single shade can be different to one another. If you’re going to the nearest hardware to check these colors, don’t be surprised that they will be presenting a lot of colors with different shading and that might be overwhelming, but always stick to the color that you had already pick and choose your best desired shade of that color.

One last tip that I can share, it is always best to ask your friends’ or family’s suggestions, it can be helped too. Always keep in mind that, there is no wrong choice, but there is always the best choice. Good luck and I hope my simple blog helped you.
